Counselling & EBSA Support

Many schools already have access to counselling services, providing 6-8 sessions of support to pupils via the Local Offer/ Cluster services. Often there is a wait for these services and the short-term format may not suit the needs of all pupils.

I offer private Counselling and EBSA Support services to schools in Leeds where individual pupils need fast access to longer term or open ended SEMH support. I can provide targeted and practical support for pupils who are finding it difficult to attend school due to SEMH/SEND issues, for example Anxiety and difficulties related to Neurodivergence. These sessions take place on the school’s premises during the school day, and are funded by the school (although schools may choose to ask parents for a contribution towards the cost of sessions.)

Counselling

I currently offer Counselling to pupils in Key Stage 2 upwards. I provide a safe, confidential space for pupils to talk about themselves and their experiences, to vent if necessary, to explore their feelings and learn coping skills. I can also offer the option of therapeutic creative activities if talking doesn't come easily.
Pupils look forward to their counselling sessions and enjoy this valuable one-to-one time, where my objectives are for them to trust that their voice is being heard, to boost their self-esteem and empower them to manage their difficulties more effectively.

EBSA & Attendance Support

When offering EBSA Support in schools (again to Key Stage 2 and upwards), I work in the same way as I have already described on my EBSA page. I listen carefully to the young person to pinpoint the exact problems they are struggling with in school, and then explore with them what could help. This plan is then shared with school and parents/carers, so that the young person has the support they need from every angle. Plans are reviewed and adjusted as necessary over a period of time, (I estimate 3 sessions, with a few weeks between sessions) until we have a structured approach which feels safe and manageable for the young person, and also manageable for school and for parent/carers.

If a young person is currently not attending school at all, I can offer the first session via phone or video call, if necessary. I find that my gentle, low-demand, collaborative approach really works to reduce anxiety and improve attendance, and is much less stressful for pupils and their families than other strategies, such as attendance officer visits and fines.
